“Most of our nuclear reactors are uranium based, unfortunately India does not have sufficient uranium. So my suggestion to the government is to go for Thorium-based reactors, as Thorium is available in plenty here,” said former president of India and scientist Dr A P J Abdul Kalam. Interacting with the students after inaugurating the ‘Fr Muller Oncology’ Centre here on Sunday, he answered to a few queries, one of which was his regarding the nuke-deal and India’s security concerns.
Clearing doubts among students, Dr Kalam said the nuclear treaty has nothing to do with security. It’s all about power generation. He proposed Thorium reactors, which he hoped, will take India out of the power crisis.
On medical professionals being posted in rural areas and the problems they face, Dr Kalam said a project he has set before the government, which if implemented, will provide urban amenities in rural areas.
“If there is knowledge, electronic and economic connectivity in the rural areas, the urban people will not find it difficult to work in the rural areas, where 70 per cent of India’s population live,” he added.
Dr Kalam also cleared certain doubts regarding stem cell research, nano technology and the conflict between Allopathy and Homeopathy. For a question on how to develop righteousness in the heart, Dr Kalam pointed out the example of Fr Augustus Muller himself, who started off giving medicines to the needy under a banyan tree and then founded the Fr Muller Homeo Medical College.
