The first results after St Aloysius College became autonomous was declared on Friday and a pass percentage of 72.93 has been recorded in the first semester together for all the degree courses in the college.
Speaking to media persons here on Monday, the college principal Fr Swebert D’Silva said that autonomy has given the college the power to set their own syllabus, possibility of organising an exam and declaring the results, but ultimately the degree certificates will be provided by the University.
Under the autonomous evaluation system, the students are assessed continuously in the form of seminars, paper presentations and attendance, and not with a final three- hour long exam, Fr D’Silva said and added that the syllabus has been properly revised and made more industry and society oriented. Also the results will be announced very fast, which enables the students to seek jobs or higher studies faster, he said.
Registrar of evaluation Prof A M Narahari informed that the evaluation system is responsible, objective and student friendly and that every paper is re-evaluated by an external faculty in case the students are not satisfied by the internal evaluation. A minimum of 40 percent marks for both theory and practical is needed for a pass, Prof Narahari said and that the examination system is fully computerised. An in-house software has been developed for the purpose, he added.

St Aloysius College is introducing five new PG courses from this academic year onwards. He complained that there are few takers for arts courses and hence there are plans to include computer, communication and spoken English skill training for the students of arts courses. There are also plans to train them for competitive examinations, he added.
