Dear Sir,
I want to send my daughter to Australia for further studies. She is now doing her BTech in Biotech. What are the eligibility conditions?
Concerned Father
Dear Concerned Father,
As long as the institution your daughter is studying in is affiliated to a University or approved by AICTE there is no problem about the recognition of such course anywhere abroad. Once your daughter is in the completion stage of the B Tech course she can start the preliminary search for a suitable University in Australia.
There are many Universities that offer Biotechnology in Australia such as University of New South- Wales, University of Wollongong, NSW, Griffith University, Queensland, Macquaire University, Sydney, NSW., Queensland University of Technology, RMIT University, Melbourne. This is only an indicative list. For more Universities and details you may browse through the following websites: www.infozee.com www.gradschools.com
Dear Sir,
I will be completing my BE in a month. I have been selected to an IT company. I would like to work for a year and then do MS in USA and join a college next year(August 2008). When should I take the GRE and TOEFL exams? Does work experience have any weightage in getting admission? What will be the average cost of living including the fees? What are the various documents needed to apply for a college after I get my GRE score? Are all the things done online?
SK, Mangalore
Dear SK,
Having work exposure in the related field immediately after graduation helps a lot particularly when you are focussed on doing your Masters in the same or similar stream. GRE and TOEFL can be taken anytime as the scores have a long validity of 3 years and 5 years respectively.
Specifically in your case ,since you are planning for the year 2008, you may go ahead and book a date immediately since the availability of slot is also to be seen. Keep minimum of 6 to 8 months time for admission process to happen. Since all information is available on the net personally I recommend you to do the search as your involvement gives deep insight into all issues concerning your study in USA.
You may browse through the following websites for relevant details: www.gradschools.com, www.petersons.com To register for GRE test visit www.gre.org. To register for TOEFL test visit www.toefl.org.
Dear Sir,
I am doing my BA in psychology and journalism. I am interested in doing a travel and tourism course in USA. What courses do I need to take up and how can I make a career in it.
Divya
Dear Divya,
Having a BA degree lays a good foundation to study Travel and Tourism at Masters Level. The Psychology and Journalism subject knowledge helps you in further studies. Apart from this even Hospitality Management, which is a related field is also open for you.
There is one limitation to go to USA for any Masters programme as USA looks for 16 years of collegiate education as pre-requisite. Hence you have to look at getting an entry into a Master of Tourism course here in India and then you can think of USA where you can get your MS in this subject in much shorter time than 4 usual semesters. Alternatively you can try to explore studying in the UK or Australia or New Zealand, where they give admission to Masters Level programmes after the 3 year degree from India.
Dear Sir,
I am studying in the 12 th Std. I have heard about nuclear science. I want some information on it. Please tell me about it and which courses are available in the US in this subject after 12th.
Omkar
Dear Omkar,
Immediately after your 12th you have to take a Bachelor degree in pure sciences more focussed on Physics and Physical Sciences whether in India or abroad.
Since you are aiming at a relatively difficult subject the best start would be to have your aptitude tested to determine whether your intelligences are apt to pursue such highly scientific subject.
If you are aiming to study in the USA there are many Universities offering courses at the Masters Level. You have to write SAT 1 and SAT 2 (scholastic aptitude test) and TOEFL, which are admission tests for entry into University for undergraduate programme of four years after which you can seek entry into Nuclear Science at the Masters and Doctorate level.
Alternatively you can pursue basic degree and Masters degree in pure sciences here in India and then plan to go for higher studies to USA.
Dear Sir,
I am holding BE degree (Electrical Engineering). Please suggest my course of action to get admitted in a US/Canada university preferably with a scholarship.
Anirban Basu, Kolkata
Dear Anirban Basu,
USA or Canada has umpteen numbers of Universities offering Masters Programs in many streams. You have taken the right step to write the GRE and you can also write the TOEFL.
In the meanwhile start browsing through the following websites to search for a University that can give you admission based on your academic performance, GRE and TOEFL scores. Web sites for USA are www.gradschools.com, www.petersons.com. For Canada www.studyincanada.ca/india, www.india.gc.ca, www.aucc.ca.
Scholarships are far too few and are available only to academic achievers.
You can browse through the websites www.finaid.org, www.nafsa.org, www.fulbright-india.org. You can also try out some benevolent organisations here in India which helps out meritorious and deserving students. JN Tata Endowment, Bombay House, 24 Homi Mody Street, Mumbai-400001. KC Mahindra Education Trust, Cecil Court, Mahakavi Bhushan Marg, Mumbai-400039. Mariwala CharityTrust, 409 Shah and Nahar Industrial Estate, Dr E Moses Road, Worli Naka, Mumbai-400018. RD Sethna Scholarship Fund, Esplanade House, 29 Hazarimal Somani Marg, Fort, Mumbai-400001. Sahu Jain Trust, 4th Floor, Times House 7, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, New Delhi -110002. Apart from scholarships other facilities that are available are assistant ship, fee waiver etc.
However be aware that these facilities may not be offered on admission even on request as they would need to verify your performance and abilities hence all this you can try out and get once you reach USA. Most of the nationalised banks offer soft loans for studies abroad.
Dear sir.
My name is Mrudula. I'm studying in 12th. I'm interested in doing my Medical course in UK. What are the academic and other requirements needed for this? Can you please suggest some good courses in the field of Biology in India apart from medical course?
Dear Mrudula,
I appreciate your long term goal. Since you are about to complete your 12th you can look for opportunities to study medicine. However to study Medicine in UK first of all you need to seek admission in to a degree course with biology subject as a must. While doing this course you need to start appearing for Medical Entrance tests.
Please be aware Medical education in UK is highly competitive and needs lot of hard work and takes long duration. Cost of education at degree level is also far higher compared to Indian education costs. Medical education is costliest. Keeping all these factors in mind check and see whether your aptitude is suitable for medical education. The component you have is your interest if this is coupled with aptitude it will help you to pursue medical education successfully provided it is affordable with your family's support.
