Man of the match Nicholau Borges scored in each half as Dempo humbled Mohun Bagan 2-0 in the fifth round of the ONGC I-League at the Nehru stadium here on Wednesday.
Dempo, who scored their third win, continued to remain on top of the table with 13 points from five matches. Bagan, who lost their third match, remained on four points from five matches.
Dempo shot into the lead in the 15th minute. A move down the right saw Anthony Pereira sending a deep cross into the box for an unmarked Borges, who hammered the ball into the net.
After resumption, Bagan goalkeeper Shilton Paul made two saves. First, he tipped the ball over off a goalbound cross from the right by Anthony Pereira. Two minutes later, he again pushed the ball out from a Roberto Silva header.
Dempo kept on the pressure and increased the lead in the 71st minute. Defender Valeriano Rebello ran down the right flank and sent a cross into the box to Edeh Chidi. Goalkeeper Paul charged out to intercept but failed.
The ball went to unmarked Borges, who slammed the ball into the empty net.
AI hold JCT
Mumbai’s Air India and JCT Mills of Phagwara played out an uninspiring, goalless draw at the Cooperage ground, adds PTI from Mumbai.
The teams had their scoring chances. JCT’s Baldeep Singh Jr’s shot struck the crossbar from 30 yards from the left flank, one of the best attempts in the match. The last 25 minutes saw little creative football and the draw left AI with four points from five ties and JCT with 11 from the same number of matches.
