Except for her laptop, police have no clues about the tourist.
On Thursday afternoon, the 26-year-old Delhi woman was supposed to be brought to Bowring Hospital for a medical check-up but she failed to turn up.
M N Reddy, IGP, National Human Rights Commission, and member Parthasarthy, landed at Bowring Hospital to record the woman’s statements, but she was not to be seen. The HRC officials grilled the investigating officer. Later, they asked the police team to trace her.
Packed off
She is believed to have boarded a Delhi-bound flight. Sources said the woman was packed off to the capital. Interestingly, the police had reportedly alerted the airport security on the woman’s possible exit and details about her circulated. However, it remains a mystery as to how she secured the boarding pass without disclosing her identity. She is said to have flown out around 3 pm.
Bureaucrat link
The incident took a serious turn after it was learnt top people are involved.
Sources said a former Andhra Pradesh bureaucrat's son-in-law had brought the woman to the City to “entertain” his friends.
Things went out of hand when middlemen played their own games, it is learnt. When she was physically abused, she decided to inform police. Police doubt she was drugged. Her cellphone records reportedly show she was on Church Street at some point of time.
Meanwhile, former chairperson of Karnataka State Commission for Women, Pramila Nesargi, told Deccan Herald: "I met the Police Commissioner and apprised him of the current situation. Who are they (police) to brand an individual a 'prostitute'? Even if she is a sex worker, it is their duty to record her complaint and go ahead with the investigation.”
NGOs and other social organisations criticised the way police have handled the case.
“Everyone has the right to complain and police should be impartial and unearth facts before giving statements,” said Nirmala, a social worker.
