The Thunga species of paddy seeds distributed in the district are fault-free. The species has given good yield in all taluks, said Agriculture Department Joint Director Dr Thippesh.
Addressing press persons after inspecting paddy fields in Addada and Karangi regions in the taluk on Wednesday, he said that he, accompanied by the officials of Seed Corporation and agriculture scientists, visited certain areas where the species was grown, in the backdrop of discussions in the taluk panchayat meeting and subsequent media reports.
About 460 quintal sowing seed of Thunga species has been distributed in the district, which has been sown in an area of 1,600 acres.
Further, seed has been produced in 75 acres for the coming year, and 1,200 quintal seed will be distributed, he said.
It is true that the yield has declined in the fields of Addada Nagaraja Shetty. But it is not the fault of the seed. The reason is the acidicity of the soil, delay in sowing and insufficient use of manures, he explained.
Taluk Panchayat President B S Sathish, Mudigere Agriculture Research Centre species expert Dushyanth Kumar, Seed Corporation Deputy Manager Rangaswamy, Agriculture department Assistant Director Prasanna Kumar were present.
