Advani’s coronation and 'Moditva'
Sir,
The BJP has hurriedly crowned L K Advani, thanks to its apprehension and nervousness because of a possible threat of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership looming large, says Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
This imprudent compliment to Modi, particularly while facing the prestigious election, by none other than the Prime Minister may enhance the prospects of BJP. At the same time it may cause a slide on the Congress votes in the remaining 95 constituencies in Gujarat where elections are to be held on 16th December.
The leadership issue and popularity of BJP leaders should not bother Congress. The BJP has declared enough in advance its Prime Ministerial candidate but can the Congress similarly do it and even if it does will it project Manmohan Singh as the prospective candidate for the Prime Minister ship?

Judicial commission
Sir,
The Supreme Court observation on the court behaving like “emperors” has not come a day too soon as, of late in the name of judicial activism what we see is judicial arrogance in many instances. Many judges have tended to behave like policy makers, especially since the Second Judges Case, wherein the judiciary itself began selecting the fellow judges for appointments. Such a practice cannot be found in any of the developed or developing countries. It is high time a National Judicial Commission is formed to be entrusted with the task of selection, transfer and censure of judges.

Shocking incident
Sir,
The news of gang rape of a tourist women in Bangalore is shocking. What is more shocking is the series of irresponsible acts of various organisations which also contribute to such crimes. The aviation company should have made arrangements for the stay of the needy passengers atleast for the night. The hotel authorities should be blamed for not giving accommodation, inspite of already having confirmed it. Courtesy demands that they should have made some arrangements in some other hotels. Last but not the least, the police are to be blamed for not booking a case immediately.

Issue probe
Sir,
The news report Tourist gang raped in city (DH, Dec 12) is shocking. The incident raises several questions. How can a star hotel turn away a lady in the night when she had confirmed reservation? What kind of service apartments are operating in the city where guest could be raped for 4 days and turned into brothel by drugging the woman. Bangalore, which prides itself as the IT capital stands besmirched by this incident. The investigation into the torrid incident must be ordered and guilty brought to book.

Hypocrisy
Sir,
The 74th Kannada Sahitya Parishat Conference is being held in Udupi. It is unfortunate that these learned men are unaware of the fact that no language can grow in isolation. If books in English are burnt, banners, name boards in English are pulled down, Kannada will not get enriched. The lovers of Kannada language and all that Kannada stands for were wearing shoes while the flags were being hoisted! So, what we witnessed in Udupi was hypocrisy at its best.

Wake-up call
Sir,
This refers to the editorial Wake-up call (DH, Dec 13). It was shocking to read the incident and what was even more incredible was the fact that the two 14-year-olds were not even a trifle unapologetic about their act. It is surely a pointer to the moral vacuum in our society that does not inculcate basic human values in little children. It is time, we as a society, read the lurking danger signs and take into consideration the impressionable young minds and what they go through, when nobody is ready to listen to their woes and share time with them.
