Centralisation Costs Consumer 7 Crores
New Delhi, Dec. 13.
A Bill for the replacement of sales tax presently levied by the States on sugar, tobacco and mill-made textiles by additional Central Excise duties was introduced in the Lok Sabha today by Finance Minister T T Krishnamachari.
Mr Krishnamachari also announced the rates of additional excise duties, which would be levied on three commodities in the place of existing sales tax.
‘We Dont Fear Russia Or China’
New Delhi, Dec. 13.
The Rajya Sabha today unanimously endorsed government’s foreign policy after Prime Minister Nehru gave a 50-minute reply to yesterday’s debate.
Mr Nehru declared that there was not “the remotest chance of a remote chance” of India being afraid of Russia or China or India having any kind of military conflict with Russia and China.

Fresh Move To Resolve Akali Issue

Jammu, Dec. 13.
Mediatory efforts to defuse the situation in Punjab and bring the agitating Akalis and the government around to the negotiating table got off to a fresh start with the sudden arrival of Punjab Chief Minister Darbara Singh in Jammu .
Mr Singh drove from Chandigarh to Jammu and immediately after had a two-hour long discussion with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah.
