Global warming: an extension of global greed
By Sudhansu R Das
Climate change, which threatens life on earth happens due to the simple reason of pursuing mono sectors.

Though the objective of the Bali conference on climate change was to cut carbon emission up to 40 per cent below 1990 level by 2020, the developed nations are noncommittal to meet the objective. It is an irony that nobody wants revenue loss in spite of knowing carbon emission will make living costlier and dangerous.

The UNDP’s Human Development Report 2007 warns a temperature rise between three and four degree would displace 340 million through flooding and drought. The retreating glaciers would cut off drinking water from as many as 1.8 billion people. The report warns the world has less than a decade to change course. The report has pointed out how climate disasters between 2000 to 2004 have affected 262 million people across the world out of which 98 per cent belong to the developing nations.

Climate change, which threatens life on earth happens due to the simple reason of pursuing mono sectors. For example, industry sector has generated immense wealth at the cost of immense damage to the environment. In the 18th century, economist Adam Smith was not knowing what kind of damage his economic theory “Wealth of the Nation” would do to the world community.

The pursuit of wealth and power among the world leaders was like the “Wahab chasing the white whale Mobydick” in the midst of danger. The present development concept propagated by the developed nations is the manifestation of an indomitable human greed. The primitive human ego to control nature for wealth and power has pushed the world into the verge of destruction.

The economy of scale as prescribed by Adam Smith cuts the cost of production to increase sale for accumulation of wealth, which actually destroys the house from its root. If clay from river can make beautiful potteries for human use what is the necessity of producing synthetic fibre from industry. If bamboo basket can meet the domestic requirement what is the use of producing millions of plastic baskets.

Growing bamboo, cane and grass and making utility items from them hardly puts pressure on environment and create pollution. There are hundreds of bio-degradable utility and decorative items available for human use.

Mahatma Gandhi rightly said “the world has enough to satisfy the need and not the greed of man”.

The pursuit of wealth for power has become so dominating that developed nations hardly see reason in changing their way of life — of which they are so wrongly convinced of. In the 17th century, 80 per cent people in Europe depended on agriculture and natural sector. In the 19th century the number had reduced to seven per cent only.

War ravaged western and European nations tried to escape from debt and inflation after the Second World War and resorted to market economy for wealth and power without understanding its long-term impact. The pursuit of wealth for power has become so dominating that developed nations hardly see reason in changing their course in spite of the clear warning from the climate scientists that the world has 10 years left to change its course.

There is a need to end greed and economy of scale in every product. Practice economy of scale, which will help mankind the poor nations. If you produce medical equipment in largescale and cut cost, it will help millions of poor people who have no money even to diagnose their diseases.

If you mass produce all kinds of utility items it will destroy handicraft skills and make people paupers. This has already happened to the world’s poor people who would not have been poor in a healthy global economy. Mass produce wind energy techniques, battery run vehicles, solar cooker, bio-gas techniques, health sector equipments, sports equipments. Not everything.
