It was Anil Kumble at his candid best. He spoke at length about himself - cricketer, captain and family man - delighting the audience with his sheer simplicity.
The Bangalorean too might have felt at home in the National High School premises as it was at this venue he took the initial steps to fame nearly two decades ago.
“I played a lot of cricket at this school ground as a youngster. I feel really good to comeback at this venue and spent some time,” the Indian Test skipper said in CNN-IBN’s special programme, Captain Kumble, to be telecasted on December 22. Success mantra
There was a question on the secret behind his success. The query was natural as 584 Test wickets will not come that easily.
“Commitment,” was his answer.
Then he went on to elaborate. “I try to stick to whatever commitment I make, if there is a commitment to do practice at 4’o clock, I try to stick to that.” Determined nature
That determined nature has seen him surviving the rigours of top flight cricket for 17 long years. He stressed the role of family in his success.
“I have been away from my family for the most part of my professional life. It is tough to be away from family, but my wife (Chetana), has hold together the family and all credit to her,” he said.
Perhaps, that attachment to family made him immediately reject the idea of turning to be an expert commentator once he bids adieu from international cricket.
“I have no such plans, I want to sit back and enjoy family life.”
Kumble also did not forget Bangaloreans, who have supported him all the way through.
Perhaps, he is the only active Indian cricketer after whom a place has been named (Anil Kumble Circle). He thanked them profusely for the support.
Being role model for thousands of kids across the country, Kumble gave them tips to success. Advice
“Be committed and give you 100 per cent always. For some, success will come soon, but for others success will come a bit late. But it will certainly come,” Kumble said.
