LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Our judiciary is doing it’s job

Sir, The clarification by K G Balakrishnan, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, should mark the end of a needless controversy and an unnecessary debate on judicial overreach.

Yet, it must never be forgotten that the judiciary exists to safeguard the rights to life, liberty and property of people, irrespective of the distinctions of caste, class and gender.
It is there to protect people from the excesses of the executive or any other institution, and from laws that violate the Constitution.

While maintaining a healthy distance from the executive and the legislature, the judiciary must ensure that neither institution acts in a manner that is detrimental to the interests of individuals, society and nation.
This must be done boldly without any fear of offending vested interests or status quoists.
On the whole, the judiciary in recent years has done well in safeguarding our constitutional rights and making the executive and the legislature accountable for their acts of omission and commission.

Loan and suicide

Sir, The hue and cry by a section of farmers over the death of a farmer over the recovery procedure adopted by ICICI bank has taken an unwarranted political turn. An amount of Rs 18,000 as the installment for the first half year and Rs 38000 for the second half year, might have led the poor farmer to tak the extreme step.
For him, to repay Rs 38000 in six months might have been an impossible task. If only the lending institutions appraised the loan applications in a fair and practical manner, such bitter things would have been avoided.

Proverbial phoenix

Sir, With his determination and grit, Sourav Ganguly has been able to regain his original touch and has started delighting his fans with flowing cover drives and hitting spinners to sixers with his characteristic stamp. Dropping from the team generally frustrates a player, destroying him further, but Ganguly has come out flying like a proverbial phoenix!

His double century in the first innings in the third Test at Bangalore, and his stylish 91 runs in the second innings must have made his critics eat their own words.

Damage to ecosystem

Sir, This has reference to your news item State plans mega hub in the Ghats (DH, Dec 14). The apex court closed down a profitable venture like Kudremukh Iron Ore Co. on account of preserving the western ghats’ biosphere and ecology.

If this was a right decision, what would happen to the eco system of ghats with a 60,000 acres of a petro chemical complex in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts?

It will not only destroy the greenery of the two districts but will surely destroy the adjacent tropical forests of western ghats. Why the government(s) cannot think of all the effects in a nutshell before taking such major decisions?

Ban on homework

Sir, The move by Andhra Pradesh government to ban homework given to school students is a wise one. Children are being burdened with a lot of homework even from the primary level.

As a result, they have practically nil or very less time for play. Thus, their mental development is retarded. Many parents and grand parents would be undergoing similar experiences with their children. Hence, Karnataka government may also consider such a move.
