ON THE TELLY

Alaap, a group of individuals interested in promotion of art has made a quiet entry into television with Sahagamana, an afternoon soap telecast on Kasturi at 2 pm from Monday to Friday. The maiden venture of Alaap, Sahagamana compares the lives of two girls hailing from different backgrounds. Circumstances bring about a change in their personalities and priorities. Through their story, Sahagamana wants to comment on the present social set up; a clash between conservative and modern values. Sahagamana, which in this case means running parallel, brings out the values of the respective families to sharp relief.

Sahagamana, which completed 50 episodes recently has Vidya Venkataram, Greeshma, Nagesh Yadav, Gokul, Aparna, Srinath Vasishta and others in the cast. M N Jayanth, who gave us the refreshing Malebillu (in the beginning) is also at the helm of Sahagamana, providing the story and screenplay as well. Bharath B J has provided the music to poet H S Venkatesha Murthy’s lyrics.

Hema Rao as Supanathi Subbi.
Meanwhile, the people involved in Alaap are also active in Shree Technologies, another production house which has ventured into making serials have also brought Supanathi Subbi to the viewers. Subbi, whose attire and mannerisms bring back memories of Jassi of Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin is played by actress Hema Bellur nee Rao. In search of an appropriate groom, Subbi represents a slightly disproportionate outlook of a person who follows the customs of an older generation while adhering to the traditions of contemporaries as well. With such confusion, it is no wonder that Subbi cannot match the requirement of any bridegroom. The expectations of her parents and grand parents are of no help either. Subbi who has minimum education and nil social exposure bears a strong prejudice on everything.

The story revolves around Subbi’s quest for a suitable groom and the subtle humour presented by her family members has ensured this sitcom a place in the viewers’ heart.

Those who haven’t met Subbi yet, need not despair for she is available on Kasturi at 9 pm from Friday to Sunday.
