Army Service Corps School and College overcame St Joseph’s College of Commerce 4-3, courtesy a brilliant save from ASC goalkeeper Suraj Roy in the sudden death, to emerge champions in the inter-collegiate football tournament at the Bangalore Football Stadium here on Friday.
After a blank scoreline after full time and extra-time, the match went into tie-breaker. However, with two misses each from St Joseph’s and ASC, the encounter then was stretched to sudden death. ASC’s Karunakaran neatly placed the ball to the right of rival custodian Pritham D before St Joseph player Mahesh’s kick was saved by Roy with a dive to his right.
St Joseph’s had only themselves to blame as the defending champions, who levelled scores at 3-3, were in a position to take the crown had they converted the final spot kick in the tie-breaker. But, John P hit straight to Roy, helping ASC to stay in the title hunt. ASC was clearly the better of the two teams on the day, but poor finishing pulled them back from taking the lead in the match. Kiran Kumar could have done better as the tournament’s best forward shot straight to Pritham D while having the leisure of a clear goal in front before A Shashidharan headed over the crossbar from close range. The second half didn’t produce any bright moments except when Joseph’s Santhosh’s cross went across the goal.
Special awards: Player of the tournament: Ignace (Al-Ameen); Best goalkeeper: Suraj Roy (ASC); Best defender: Rafi (Al-Ameen); Best midfielder: Raju M (St Joseph’s); Best forward: Kiran Kumar (ASC); Fairplay award: Christ College.
