Popular environmentalist A N Yellappa Reddy has observed that Karnataka should prepare a roadmap to meet 60 per cent of energy requirements of all districts by utilising renewable fuels.
Speaking at a function organised by Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Corporation Limited (KREDL) to mark the National Energy Conservation Day on Friday, Mr Reddy said the State has big potential to tap the renewable energy.
“Brazil draws about 44 per cent of its energy needs from renewable fuels; we too need to prepare a road map to meet our needs,” he added.
Reddy was of the view that every policy package evolved in the State should make energy conservation mandatory. Moreover, the State should earmark enough budget for transferring new green technologies in every district depending upon their resource potential. “Every political party’s manifesto should spell out their vision in the area of energy conservation, afforestation and reforestation of degraded lands,” he added.
KREDL Managing Director Dr B Shivalingiah underscored the need to conserve energy besides, making greater use of renewable sources of energy. “Awareness should be created in each and every household,” he added.
Meeting proposal
The KREDL also proposed to hold a meeting with the commissioners of city and town municipalities in the State next month to impress upon them the need to replace the street lights with energy efficient CFLs.
Additional Director of Centre for Collaborative and Advanced Research (CPRI), R K Hegde said a study to evaluate the implementation of building energy code will be undertaken in the State.
