No longer it is a complaint, bear menace has become a malady for the people of this region. Reports on bear attack on villagers have often been appearing in print media. Villagers are of the view that forest department and Wild life Conservation department should take some measures to control the menace within the framework of law.
Unfortunately, the authorities concerned haven’t uttered a single word in this regard.
The concerned departments might have forwarded the message to higher authorities, but no action has been taken by any department to protect the lives of people.
Let’s assume that Wild Life Department is unable to take any action on this matter. But, one must understand the plight of people living in Koratagere and Tumkur taluk where bear menace has reached dangerous stage.
Hilly areas
Rural people have to work through out the day to earn their livelihood. Moreover, they may have to go to their lands in the early morning for the cultivation. Probably, the biggest problem in the village is that of toilets.
No matter whether they can afford to build a toilet or not, even now, rural people prefer open area to enclosed toilet.
Koratagere taluk is surrounded by innumerable hills and rocks, a shelter for bears. Similar hills and rocks can be found even in Pavagada and Madhugiri. But, fortunately bear menace is not so much in these places.
Earlier Pavagada faced the menace of wolves. Now bears have become a nuisance in Tumkur and Koratagere taluks. Farmers have to walk in these areas everyday as their lands are very close to the hills.
As the concerned departments fail to take measures, villagers have found some precautions they can take to protect themselves from the bear attack. They are aware that it is possible to protect themselves from any animal provided they they take precautions on time.
Setting fire
People have found some solutions to the problem. It’s a general notion that bears are afraid of fire. Bear is a very sensitive animal covered with hair. People believe that it runs away at the sight of the fire.
Hence, people want to play this trick to keep the troublesome animals away. They have started setting up bonfire at different corners of the fields. This will not only light up the area but also makes sure that bears do not pass nearby, say villagers.
Carry torch
Also people are advised to carry flaming torch whenever they walk in the forest. These measures will help scaring away bears.
Villagers express their ire against forest department which has failed to provide any precautionary measures to them.
