CMC commissioner J G Padmanabh witnessed the sorry state of affairs at the slaughterhouses at M G Market, during his surprise visit there on Saturday.
Last Tuesday, CMC chief secretary Suresh had received several petitions from the public about the unhygienic conditions at the slaughterhouse in the market. The commissioner and other CMC authorities on Saturday visited the market to inspect it.
They made note of the open drains beside the slaughterhouse, with blood of the slaughtered animals flowing through them.
The commissioner criticised the environment officer after he noticed the rotting carcasses, bones and entrails of the slaughtered animals polluting the atmosphere. When the official cited lack of water as the reason for not being able to maintain cleanliness in the area, the commissioner directed him to take up cleaning operations in the area with water supplied from a corporation tanker.
The commissioner also directed the removal of bags that had been piled along the road by shop owners, causing inconveinence to the public. Some shopkeepers had even converted their shops - which were unauthorised constructions - into homes and were living there with their families. The irate commissioner ordered the market inspector Sriramam Reddy to issue take immediate action, failing with notices would be issued. Speaking to Deccan Herald, he said that the council intends to take up programmes to create awareness on the environment.
