It was a day of protests at the venue of the 74th Akhila Bharata Kannada Sahitya Sammelana. Tension prevailed in the venue throughout the day.
The day began with Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (Praveen Shetty faction) activists staging a protest against the invitation extended to Karnataka Rakshana Vedike President T A Narayana Gowda to speak.
As the first discussion - in which Mr Gowda was taking part - began, nearly 30 activists of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike led by Praveen Shetty started shouting slogans against KSP President Prof Chandrashekar Patil and organizers for inviting Narayana Gowda to the Sammelana.
The protesters also shouted slogans against Mr Gowda. "KRV President Narayana Gowda is unfit to make a speech from the Sammelana platform as he is accused in several criminal cases," the protesters said.
The Sammelana, which concluded on Saturday, resolved to oppose any move to set up a Hindi academy in Karnataka.
The Governor has recent ly announced that he would try to open a separate Hindi Academy in Karnataka. The establishment of such an academy is an act of aggression against the Kannada language. Hence, the Sammelana strongly opposes any attempt to set up Hindi academy."
Resolutions
The Sammelana passed a total of 14 resolutions.
They included: To urge the Central government to bring out stamps and coins in honour of historical persons, monuments, social reformers, litterateurs of Karnataka; Implementation of the Mahajan Commission report (inclusion of Kasargod into Karnataka) and Implementation of Kannada software in administration, and power to the Kannada Development Authority to take action against department heads who fail to implement the same.
However, minutes later, the KRV activists (Shetty faction) including its President Praveen Shetty were arrested by the police.
The second protest started when a speaker accused pro-Kannada activists of not protesting against imposition of Hindi the way they have been protesting against English.
A certain Mr Srinivas, said to be belonging to KRV (Gowda faction), took exception to the speaker and rushed near the stage.
A DySP immediately rushed to the spot and pushed the protester, which irked other activists, who rushed to the spot, leading to more chaos. Protesters sought a-pology from the police officer.
The third protest started soon after Union Minister Oscar Fernandes finished his speech.
He said that all Kannadigas should put pressure on Union government to get classical status for Kannada. He said that all Kannadigas should put pressure on Union government to get classical status for Kannada.
But a few members of the public asked Fernandes what he has done for Kannada. Though Champa tried to clarify that Fernandes has been doing his best, one Uday Dharmasthala, who claimed to be a Kannada activist, said he was not happy with the answer and loudly gave a call to fight for Kannadigas' rights.
