Hitting the campaign trail for Himachal Pradesh (HP) assembly poll, Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Saturday attacked BJP accusing it of “injecting the poison of communalism” in society.
“While Congress believed in and practised politics of uniting the society, they (BJP) worked to divide the society by pitting one community against another by injecting the venom of communalism,” Ms Gandhi said.
“The BJP’s effort is to befool people to gain their votes and asked the people not to fall in their trap,” Gandhi said while addressing rallies in Shimla and Una.
Highlighting the efforts by Congress party in the development of the country, Gandhi charged BJP with not cooperating with Mahatma Gandhi during the freedom struggle and always putting roadblocks in the growth of the nation after the independence.
Stating that Congress opposition to the BJP was on ‘fundamentalism’, Ms Gandhi, in her maiden election campaign for the December 19 assembly election in HP, asked the masses not to fall in their “trap”.
Comparing the performance of the present UPA government under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh with the NDA rule, she said that the latter presented an example of “poor governance”.
The NDA government wasted a lot of public money drumbeating their “India Shining” campaign.
“Under them, India shined only for a handful of rich people but the present UPA government is working for all-round development of all sections of society,” the Congress President said.
