As many as 25 residents of this apartment complex with 50 flats, observed this batti bandh (lights off) campaign.
At 7.30 pm sharp, residents switched off all electricals and lit candles instead.
The Temple Tree Apartments Association (F block), which came into existence only two months ago, started its pro-environment activities by observing batti bandh campaign.
Ms Indrani Bhaksy, secretary of the association, said that members of the association thought of holding such a campaign after they read similar programmes in different parts of the world, reported in newspapers.
“There was a lukewarm response from the residents as it was planned at short notice. We could not inform all residents about the campaign. However in future we will inform residents well in advance and ensure that more people take part in the campaign,” Ms Bhaksy said. The association is thinking of holding the campaign at least once a month in future. “Bangalore city is growing at alarming pace on Kanakapura Road. As the city grows, pollution level also increases. Being residents of the locality, we need to make efforts to minimise the effect of pollution. The association has decided to take up issues concerned with the environment. Global warming is a burning issue and we have begun our activities with the batti bandh campaign”, she said.
Small effort
Ms Bhaksy feels that what her association has done is a very small effort in spreading awareness on global warming. “It will be very good when other residents’ associations take up the cause and hold similar campaigns.
Such efforts will definitely help us achieve our dream of a better living in future,” she said.
