Seminar on 'Struggle against imperialism' from Dec 23

Hampi Kannada University department of History and Karnataka State Archives Department will organise a seminar on ‘Struggle against imperialism: 1837 Amarasullia riots’ on December 23 and 24 at Kaveri Kalakshethra.

Addressing a news conference on Sunday, Hampi University Department of History Professor Dr Vijay Punacchha Thambanda said that the aim of the seminar is to shed light on the Amarasullia protest in Kodagu.

“The episode of Amarasulia protest was so great that it should have found a place in the pages of history but unfortunately it has not received the place it deserved,” he lamented and said that apart from informing the people about such a noble struggle staged against the imperial forces, the seminar also aims at bringing the Amarasullia chapter in the pages of history. He informed that the seminar will be inaugurated by Kerala Higher Education Council President Dr K M Pannicker on December 23 at 10.30 am. Mangalore University Department of History Professor Dr Surendra Rao, MLC Arun Machaiah, Department of Archives Director Dr Usha Suresh, Deputy Commissioner K R Niranjan and others will be present.

The discussions that will be followed will have topics on Kittoor Rani Chennamma, Naragunda Baba Saheb, Sangolli Rayanna, Rani Abbakka Devi, Hyder Ali and Tippu and other great leaders.

A paper on ‘Haleri Kings and Amarasullia Struggle’ will be presented on December 24 by Karnataka History Academy Vice-President Dr M G Nagaraj along with theatre personality Addanda Kariappa on ‘Post riot days: experience of the episode’, Mangalore University History professor Dr Kodira M Lokesh on ‘Attack on Kodagu by the British and the riots’. Papers on ‘Kalyanappa’s riots’, ‘Amarasullia riots: inter state relation’, ‘Amarasullia riots: social and political angles’ will be held in the afternoon.
