American feminist author and founder of 'Ms' magazine Gloria Steinem today expressed outrage at Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen being bundled out from here, saying it had violated her human rights.
''This is an outrageous violation of her human rights. She has a right to be safe,'' Steinem told emdiapersons after an interaction with women's rights activists here.
Violence erupted in some areas of the metropolis on November 21 when a section of the people attacked the police demanding Taslima's deportation from the country on the plea that her writings, especially the novel 'Dwikhondito' had hurt the sentiments of Muslims.
The following day, the West Bengal government quietly moved her out to Rajasthan. She was later taken to Delhi and from there, to an undisclosed location.
Asked about Nasreen's withdrawal of several pages form her book 'Dwikhondito' following the violence, Steinem said, ''it is one thing if she had made the decision on her own. If she was forced, it is a different matter.''
Steinem said she was familiar with a number of Nasreen's writings and had also published her work in the 'Ms'. ''I met her in Delhi last February during a conference of South Asian writers.
