An insult to a former President
Sir, It is more appalling than shocking that our former President A P J Abdul Kalam was made to wait for four long months to get his home in the capital from where he had commanded the country’s armed forces for five years.
Although it is Indian psyche not to accord respect where it is due, it is sickening that this psyche has not spared even our former President who is acclaimed world wide not because of the position he held but as a great scientist and philanthropist.
This lapse on the part of the government could not be compensated by any apologies and excuses because it could not do anything with the ex-ministers and even MPs who refuse to vacate their accommodation even after years. By this lapse the government is disrespectful and disdainful to Kalam alone but to the whole nation that respects Kalam.

Ignore the bleating
Sir, Supposedly a form of “investigative” journalism, the morality of “sting operations” has always been in doubt, not least because they often breach ethical norms, including those of decency and privacy. Selective targeting of individuals through entrapment makes them all the more suspect. Modern equipment allows the manipulation of images and sound recordings, rendering the integrity of un-moderated “sting operations” dubious. Television channels are unlikely to toe the line meekly. They have cried wolf once too often and the time has come to ignore their bleating.

Tough stand
Sir, The CPI(Maoist), has succeeded in its mission, by attacking the Dantewad prison, where in at least 200 Maoists, escaped. Some senior officials have been suspended following the incident, but will it solve the problem? It is not the first time that such incidents have happened. We need to provide extra security for prisons which are susceptible to these kinds of acts. Apart from that, the centre should adopt a tough stand and come out with a comprehensive policy to curb the Maoist menace.

Centre should act
Sir, The sufferings of Indians, mainly Tamilians, in Malaysia are getting worsened with the arrest of five activists of the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf). They are going to be tried with serious charges like sedition. We cannot keep quiet over this matter saying that it is the internal matter of Malaysia. The central government should persuade Malaysia to view the problems of Tamilians sympathetically, and release the arrested activists.

Underground cables
Sir, Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) has taken up a good project of putting all electrical cables underground, using trenchless technology. By this latested technology, one need not have to dig the roads and disturb the public and spoil the atmosphere and the roads. If undertaken seriously and sincerely on priority basis, probably Bangalore can become once again, the garden city retaining its trees.

The real story
Sir, The recent front page coverage of Rahul Mahajan’s separation from his wife again reinforces the view that our media creates hype and sells hype in their business interest. Mahajan is a non-entity who neither holds any important position in BJP nor is a celebrity by any yardstick to command such coverage. The real point that how late Pramod Mahajan a small time teacher and a Sangh Parcharak amassed so huge wealth which allows his prodigal son to have this sort of life style, was never allowed to be hammered by our press.
