Three scorers felicitated

MJV Murthy, P Seshamurthy and MG Sampath Kumar were felicitated by the Karnataka Scorers and Statisticians Association, which was formed on Monday, for their contribution to Karnataka cricket, reports DHNS from Bangalore.

India climb two places to 143

India climbed two places to 143rd in the latest FIFA rankings and was placed 26th in Asia, reports PTI from New Delhi. India have 158 points. The rankings show that India has climbed 13 places in the last 12 months from 157th.

SA retain squad to face WI

South Africa will go into the first two Tests of a three-match series against the West Indies with the same squad that won successive series against Pakistan and New Zealand, reports AFP from Port Elizabeth. 

The squad: Graeme Smith (captain),  Ashwell Prince (vice-captain), Herschelle Gibbs, Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers, Mark Boucher, Shaun Pollock, Andre Nel, Paul Harris, Dale Steyn, Makhaya Ntini.

Dempo, EB in tough groups 

Dempo Sports Club and East Bengal were grouped with Middle Eastern opposition in the draw for the 2008 Asian Cup on Monday, reports PTI from New Delhi.

Dempo will take on Sur from Oman, Bahrain’s Al Muharraq and Lebanon’s Al Ansar in Group A. EB will face Ahli Sana’a (Yemen), Safa from Lebanon and Jordan’s Al Wihdat in Group B.

Pro league  kabaddi in April

The Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India (AKFI) has decided to introduce Professional National League Kabaddi tournament from next year and the first edition will be hosted by ONGC in April, reports PTI from Amravati.

Vidyadhar shocks Sridhar

Unseeded 29-year-old JBS Vidyadhar knocked out top-seeded Anup Sridhar 17-21, 21-7, 21-6 in the men’s semifinals of the Patni Computers all-India major ranking badminton tournament on Monday, reports UNI from Pune.

Results (semifinals): Men: JBS Vidyadhar (AP) bt 1-Anup Sridhar (PSPB) 17-21, 21-17, 21-16; 2-P Kashyap (AP) bt 3-Anand Pawar (AI) 18-21, 30-29, 23-21.

Women: 1-Trupti Murgunde (PSPB) bt 4-Dhanya Nair (Rlys) 21-8, 21-5; 2-Aditi Mutatkar (PSCB) bt Gayatri Vartak (Mah) 21-13, 14-21, 21-17.

DLF Golf Club adjudged best

The DLF Golf & Country Club, Gurgaon, venue for next year’s Johnnie Walker Classic, has been adjudged the best course in the sub-continent in the eighth ‘Asian Golf Monthly’ awards, reports PTI from New Delhi. The award, announced by the magazine is widely regarded as the Oscar of the Asian golf course, was presented in Singapore, recently.

Maldini confirms retirement

Italy and AC Milan great Paolo Maldini confirmed he will end his 24-year career at the end of this season, reports AFP from Rome.

Speaking to Italian TV channel Mediaset Premium, the 39-year-old claimed he would not play past his 40th birthday — which arrives just a week after the end of the Italian season.

Gilchrist asked to skip final ODI

Australia vice-captain Adam Gilchrist has been ordered to miss Thursday's deciding one-day match against New Zealand in Hobart to save himself for the upcoming test series against India.

Australia need to win or draw the match to regain the Chappell-Hadlee they lost to New Zealand last season.

The wicketkeeper-batsman will be replaced by Brad Haddin.
