Committees to regulate heavy traffic movement
DH News Service, Bangalore:

The State Government has entrusted the task of regulating movement of heavy vehicles to the District Road Safety Committees.

According to a circular issued by the Principal Secretary, Public Works, the task has been entrusted to the committees to clear the confusion on who should regulate the movement of heavy traffic.

District magistrates (commissioner of police in Bangalore), executive engineers in charge of communication and buildings, and executive engineers of national highways divisions under different laws are now regulating the movement of vehicles on different roads.

“To bring about co-ordination among various authorities, the Karnataka Government has thought it fit to assign the job of regulation of the movement of heavy vehicles to the district road safety committees,” the circular states.

The committee will meet once a month to discuss the issue of restriction of movement of vehicles and trailers on different types of roads with a view to prevent damage to road surface and provide for safe movement of the vehicles and road users, the circular said.

The committee constituted at the district level comprises the deputy commissioner, district-level officers of the Public Works, Ports and IWT department, National Highways, Transport department, Municipalities, Zilla Panchayat, Urban development authorities and the Town and Country Planning Department.
