Underpasses yet to take off

The BBMP’s promise to begin construction of road underpasses using RC pre-cast box technology on Bellary Road from December 15, has been a non-starter.

BBMP Commissioner Dr Subramanya last month assured that these underpasses would be built within 72 hours to ease traffic snarls, at intersections for signal-free movement of vehicles to Devanahalli. However, work on the project - expected to cost the BBMP Rs 40 crore - is yet to take off.

The BBMP engineers, denying a delay said, utility shifting - including removal of cables by BESCOM and pipes by BWSSB were on going at present. “We have also commenced construction of pre-fabricated frame casts and reinforced earth panels for the underpass. Once this is through, we are ready to begin earth excavation. This could be done by the end of this month,” sources added.

Snake to be sent for verification

The Forest department will send the ‘Club Snake’ to Bangalore University or Agriculture University to verify its breed.

“We even do not know whether the cobra is real or not. We are planning to send the bottle to zoology experts.

The seal will be opened tomorrow,” said a source in the forest department on Tuesday. Once it is confirmed it is an Indian breed, the accused would be arrested, the source added. At present, the snake is at Aranya Bhavan, the office of the district forest department. When contacted, District Forest Officer Vanashri said, the bottle carrying cobra will be produced before a Sessions Court tomorrow.”

The bottle carrying a dead cobra was seized from NYX Club on Saturday night by officials of the forest department.

Stir against leather

Armed with a banner, ‘Imagine if we killed you for your skin’, members of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals - India (PETA) staged a protest by lying motionless next to the replica of a skinned calf on Tuesday. They were protesting against the leather industry.

The protest was aimed at creating awareness on how animals are treated before they are turned into leather products.
