Deccan Herald » District » Detailed Story
A door with 270 yrs history
DH News Service, Bangarpet:

No doubt, this is one of the rare, ancient and marvellous houses one can find in the state.

Madamangala village  is  8 km  away from Bangarpet where in sericulture is the main occupation of people.

The village has five - six houses which have the history of more than 200 years. Among these is Pillappa's house which dates back to 270 years.

This is among the rarest treasures in the district.  Pillappa bought the house few years back from late Siddananjappa of Veerashaiva community. It almost resembles the extravagant set put for some film with historical theme. The measurement of the house  is about 65 ft in legnth and and 85 ft in width.

Teak all over

Though the house has been modified to the requirements of the present world,  old style and architecture have been retained. Teak wood has been used generously for all the nine doors, windows and staircase.

The architecture of the doors is awesome with carvings of Lord Ganesha, and Lakshmi on the doors. Even the structure of the pillars is eye-catching.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, the owner of the house, Pillappa, (90 )said teak has been used for the construction of the house as it was cheap about 270 years ago. Now, the price of the wood crosses few lakhs.

One lakh for the door

“One of our relatives had offered over Rs one lakh for the door alone, but we just rejected it since we consider the house as one huge monument that needs preserving,” said Pillappa's son Shashikumar.

“We get fresh air and good sun light in the house. Moreover, pure drinking water is also available. Pillars resemble the intricate carvings at Belur and Halebeedu. We consider it our luck to stay in this house,” said family members.

Even the lattice has been fixed in the house to ensure that  the house is free  from any theft.

Auspicious

Facility has been created in the verandah to ensure that rain water passes through the house. This is done as the beleif and practice of their ancestors’ that  rain water passing through the house would bring them luck.

The house also has rooms that are big enough to accomodate big family functions such as marriage to small gathering like pooja related ocassions etc, right within its sprawling premises.
