Pramod Mahajan’s brother-in-law and Maharashtra former deputy chief minister Gopinath Munde on Tuesday welcomed the life-term to Pravin Mahajan.
“Justice has been done. We are happy that the court has sentenced the culprit,” he said. Mahajan’s other brother Prakash, however, said the whole exercise was very painful for the family.
“We lost our elder brother and now the younger brother is going to jail for life, our family is scattered.”
Public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said the prosecution would appeal in the High Court for an enhancement of the sentence after studying the judgment.
“We will read the judgement after which we will seek an enhancement of the sentence from the Bombay High Court,” Nikam said, stating that the murder fell in the rarest of rare case category since Pravin had killed the “concept of brotherhood”.
The reason as to what prompted Pravin to kill Pramod might remain under wraps for 20 long years. During the trial, Pravin was all set to present his reasons. But the prosecution demanded that the testimony be recorded in-camera. Even the defence did not object. Unless the judgment itself refers to Pravin’s testimony, it will remain under wraps for next 20 years according to Right to Information Act.
