Maoists protest in Beur, Jehanabad jails

Hundreds of Naxals in high security Beur jail held violent protests, clashed with securitymen and other inmates and launched an indefinite fast on Tuesday to protest the suicide by a comrade prompting authorities to use force to push them back into their cells, PTI reports from patna.

Nagina Manjhi, a resident of naxal-affected Gaya district, had committed suicide by hanging himself in the jail hospital on December 14.The situation was brought under control after use of mild force as the district administration rushed in CRPF, CISF and special auxiliary police contingents to control the situation.

Schoolboy stabs junior  for rejecting him

Nurman Ali, a class XI student stabbed a class VII student of Baruipara High School and then consumed poison after she rejected his marriage proposal in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district on Monday, police sources said on Tuesday, reports PTI from Behrampore, West Bengal.

The girl was rushed to the Behrampore New General Hospital and Nurman to Behrampore Sadar Hospital. The condition of both Nurman and the girl was stable now, sources added.

Indians get life term for murder in Dubai

A court here has sentenced two Indian brothers to life imprisonment for committing a pre-meditated murder of a compatriot and dumping his body in a hole after stealing his mobile phone, reports PTI from Dubai.

The Dubai Court of First Instance awarded the life term, which effectively means 25 years in prison, to the Indian men, who have been identified only as 42-year-old J O and 28-year-old O O. The brothers will be deported after serving their sentence, which is subject to appeal.

Bomb blast in Lucknow University

Panic gripped the Lucknow University after unidentified youth threw a bomb near the varsity’s Commerce faculty and opened fire in the air on Tuesday, reports UNI from Lucknow. No casualty was reported in the incident, police said, adding it has created fear among students and teachers.

Police in strength have been deployed to avoid any fresh violence in the area.

Investigations were underway, sources added.

Customs officials seize  910 star tortoises

Over 900 live star tortoises meant for smuggling to Malaysia have been seized from two passengers at the Anna International airport here on Tuesday, airport sources said, reports PTI from Chennai.

Acting on a tip-off, customs officials seized as many as 510 tortoises from Sultan Shaik Mohammed (22), belonging to Ilayangudi in Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, CISF personnel seized 400 star tortoises from another passenger, Velusamy. The seized consignments, totally, were worth Rs nine lakh in the international market.
