Alva's Virasat from January 2

Alva’s Education Foundation is all set for the annual national cultural festival Alva’s Virasat- 2008 between January 2 and 6 in the serene environment of the herbal garden Shobhavana in Moodbidri.

Addressing a press meet here on Wednesday, Alva’s Education Foundation Chairman Dr M Mohan Alva said Virasat provides music lovers an opportunity to witness internationally acclaimed artistes in action.

This year’s Alva’s Virasat will host artistes like Saxophone exponent Kadri Gopalanath, Mohanveena artiste Vishwamohan Bhatt, Instrumental fusion by Dr Ghatam Karthik, sitar player Purbayan Chattarjee, drum maestro Shivamani, Rudresh Mahanthappa, A K Palanivelu, V Selva Ganesh etc.

Alva’s Virasat award

Alva’s Virasat award for 2008 will be conferred on Saxophone artiste Kadri Gopalanath. The award will comprise of Rs 10,000 cash prize, citation, memento.

Awardee will be carried to the stage in a silver palanquin procession, he informed.

Cultural treat

On January 2, the music lovers will be treated with an unique Symphony of melodies—East and west consisting of Kadri Gopalanath on saxophone, Rudresh Mahanthappa on American jazz saxophone, Dr Haridwara Mangalam, A K Palanivelu, drum maestro Shivamani, V Selva Ganesh on kanjeera, Bangalore Rajashekar on morsing.

The second day of Virasat will include concert of Vishwamohan Bhatt and Rajastani folk artists—Desert slide. From 8.40 pm, Manipuri dances by Manipuri Jagoi Marup.

There will be ‘heart beat ensemble’ by Dr Ghatam Karthik and troupe from Chennai and Sri Lankan classical and folk dances by Srilankan artistes on January 4.

On January 5, ‘Sastriya Syndicate’ by Pandith Purbayan Chattarjee and variety of folk dances of Karnataka presented by department of Kannada and Culture will enthrall the audience. 

On the concluding day, there will be ‘Sangeetha rasasanje’ by well-known play back singers of  silver screen and ‘Chhou’ dances, Dr Alva added.

Alva’s Varna Virasat

Dr Alva said a special programme ‘Alva’s Varna Virasat’ spot painting by eminent 35 artists of Karnataka at Vidyagiri campus in Moodbidri will be held between December 27 and 29.
