Baskets and shelves, low tables and drawers, filled with odds and ends, clothes and jewellery. That’s what Kahawa is all about. This small space on Cunningham Road is filled with loads of interesting stuff, also dedicating it to upcoming designers with new designs coming in at regular intervals.
Nishi Rahman who owns the place says, “Our main objective is to promote art, craft and design. We are open to any new, upcoming designer who wishes to showcase their work. This is a free space and we allow them to retail from here. And when I say designer, it doesn’t have to be a professional, it can be a design student, a housewife, just about anyone who has talent can come to us. I personally check and approve of all the work that designers bring to us. But even if we turn down someone’s work, we do tell them how they can improve on it and take in the finished product later.”
The store has a wide array of items starting with clothes — there are both ethnic and western wear available. Nishi says that they are the only store which retails sarees by the Royal House of Mysore. Apart from other designers, even Nishi’s mother Nafees Fazal, a former minister also has a line of sarees.
Nishi is proud of the fact that many artists and designers who started off in Kahawa are now doing well in the industry. The store, at present, has a completely new collection of everything. There are accessories like belts, bags, shoes and much more.
There are decorative crafts for the house like sun catchers, photo frames, various wall hangings, vases and much more made of everything from paper and porcelain to metal and wood.
There are drawers and showcases filled with jewellery consisting simple silver jewellery, paper, metal and beads as well as semi-precious jewellery designed by various jewellers. There are also many odds and ends like the Turkish evil eye wall hangings or portable laptop tables and much more.
The store is ideal for gifting options and ideas, the collection is priced from Rs 50 to Rs 15,000 and there is something for everyone.
