Sixteen people died as heavy rains lashed coastal Tamil Nadu for the second day on Tuesday. The deaths were due to electrocution and wall collapses.
A family of four died in Tiruchi due to wall collapse while another a family of three were electrocuted in a village near Thanjavur. Tirukalukundram in Chengalpattu district, Chidambaram and Arni reported one death each while two died in Vellore. Standing paddy crops in 1.4 lakh hectares in the Cauvery delta districts of Thanjavur, Thiruvarur and Nagapattinam were flooded.
Top district revenue officials inspected the flooded areas and made arrangements to pump out water.
Flash floods cut off the Tiruchi-Dindugal Road and heavy winds drove fishing boats into the sea in Marakannam shore near Mahabalipuram.
Landslides occurred at two places at Barliar and another area about 30 km from Udhagamandalam. However, there were no reports of casualties or damage to property. Vehicular traffic has been affected as some trees and bamboo plants had fallen on the ghat roads due to landslip. Traffic was diverted via Kothagiri.
The met department said the trough of low pressure was now lying in south-western Bay of Bengal off Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka coast. Heavy to very heavy rains were likely over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the next 24 hours. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into it.
