Syed Fazaluddin shocked third-seeded Aditya Madkekar of Karnataka 6-3, 1-6, 6-1, while Harsh Mankad, making a comeback after an injury-prompted lay-off, shut out fifth seed Vivek Shokeen (Delhi) 6-4, 6-4 to cruise into the men’s singles quarterfinals of the senior National grasscourt championships here on Wednesday.
Top-seeded Karan Rastogi of Maharashtra, however, justified his top billing by romping into the last eight with a 6-3, 6-2 win over statemate Rohan Gajjar at the Calcutta South Club.
The second seed and National hardcourt champion Ashutosh Singh accounted for Karnataka player Arjun Goutham 6-0, 7-6 (7-5), while fourth-seeded Divij Sharan of Delhi scripted an emphatic 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Tamil Nadu’s Kamala Kannan.
Veteran Fazaluddin, who has been out of the circuit for the last few years, showed flashes of his old brilliance en route to the victory over Madkekar.
Mankad, who had returned to the circuit after a one-year hiatus due to a knee-cap injury and is participating in the tournament as a wild card, broke Shokeen in the first game. But the seeded player paid back the compliments in the next game.
