Astro turfs arrive in Madikeri

Astro turf worth Rs 2.25 crore has arrived from Melborne in Autsralia to Madikeri. The atro turf maidan will come up near SAI residential quarters in Madikeri.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, SAI Administrator C A Karumbaiah said the astro turf is seven metre wide and 110 metre long. Once the weather reaches 27 degree celsius, the work on laying astro turf will begin.

He said PWD department has been given the contract to lay the astro turf. Through Jubilee Sports Technology Institute, PWD department purchased astro turf from Melbourne Sports Technology Industries Pvt Limited.

The astro turf maidan is being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 5 crore. The work on the maidan is almost completed. Since the Jubilee Sports Technology Institute is undertaking the work on astro turf maidan in Haryana, the work in Madikeri will be undertaken after its completion in Haryana by the end of this month.

Mr Karumbaiah said maidan will be inaugurated by Union Minister for Sports in February.

Astro turf maidans are being laid in 10 places in the country. Kodagu is one of them. More preference will be given for women’s hockey in the astro turf maidan, he added.
