Retention of English as second language
NEW DELHI, Dec 22
The University Grants Commission has accepted the main recommendations of the report of the English Committee headed by Pandit H N Kunzru.
The committee submitted its report to the Commission last month. The Commission considered the report at its meeting held in New Delhi on December 4, 1957 and has generally accepted it with the certain observation.
Poor polling in Bangalore civic elections
BANGALORE, Dec 22
Hardly 50 per cent of the voters turned up at the polls today to elect their representatives to the Bangalore Corporation Council. There was a little enthusiasm in the constituencies involving straight contests.
In this election, women proved better canvassers than men. The afternoon polling was dull though canvassing was brisk.

In a hard-hitting judgment, the Delhi High Court has said the land and development office of the Union Housing Ministry has “degenerated into a perpetual source of corruption.” In an 84-page judgment, Mr Justice S B Wad recently gave the examples of several officers who had got themselves transferred or had been forced to leave the department.
