“We can understand your problems. But we can not do anything. Even after three months of election to urban local bodies, our membership has not been recognised by the government. In this background, we can not say anything... This is how the newly elected Corporators expressed their helplessness over the problems pertaining to the various wards surrounding Bikarnakatte area.
They were speaking at a programme on ‘Proposal, review and solution,’ an interaction with the newly elected representatives at Bikarnakatte Government Model Higher Primary School on Sunday.
The programme was organised by Utsahi Yuvaka Vrinda, and Dharmasthala Rural Development Self-Help Group. The programme saw sea of problems from the people. But there was no assurances from the representatives.
Tax on water
They said water is not supplied properly to Kadri. However, they expressed displeasure over increase in water tax by three per cent.
The members of the public complained that water is getting wasted owing to the old and worn out pipes. There is a need to change the pipes supplying water, they said. Some even questioned why there was no underground drainage in Bikarnakatte.
Problems of disposing the waste in underground drainage in Kalai-Kandettu, digging of road for ADB project and incidents of electric wires hanging dangerously were brought to the notice of elected representatives.
Former MLA Krishna Palemar said “the previous government approved vented dam for Rs 40 crore. Tender process had begun and Rs 13 crore had already been released. But now the process has been halted. Now there is a proposal to reduce the amount to Rs 30 crore.”
He termed the failure of authorities concerned to provide power to Corporators even after three months of election as ‘murder of democracy.’ Bikarnakatte School Head Teacher K Anand inaugurated the programme. Corporator D K Ashok Kumar presided. Mariamma Thomas and Gretta Rebello were present.
