“Approach Of Affection”

Prime Minister Nehru today appealed for an “approach of affection and love” in international dealings, which, he said, brings out affection and love from the other country.”
Addressing the annual convocation of Viswabharati, he said that the cold war, which was based on hatred and bias, could not be justified by any ideals – “ancient mediaeval or
modern.”
Russians Create Artificial Quake
London, Dec 23
Soviet scientists created an artificial earthquake by firing 1,000 tons of explosives 130 feet below ground in a remote area of the Uzbek desert. Moscow Radio said yesterday.
The explosions, made during a series of experiments in mining research, formed a crater with a diameter of some 200 yards.

Jayawardene Wins Referendum
Colombo, Dec 23
President Jayawardene has won the referendum.
He secured a credible 54.7 per cent popular endorsement of his proposal to double parliaments life till August 1989 without a general election and in the process paved the way for a virtual one-party rule in Srilanka in the coming years.
Mr Jayawardene secured 3.14 million of the 5.74 million votes polled in the referendum on Wednesday.
