Slum dwellers plan protest against government apathy
DH News Service,Tumkur:
The slum dwellers of Tumkur district are an angry lot. Despite having paid money for sites to be allotted to them by the district administration, they have nothing but empty promises to show for it.

Expressing anger over the state of affairs, te Slum Dweller Welfare Committee as decided to hold a demonstration in front of the City Municipal Offices on the 27th of December.
This was announced by the president of association A Narasimha Murthy at a press conference. Among the others who were present on the occasion included chief secretary Syed Afzal and workers’ leader Syed Mujeeb.
No action
“There are six slums in the city and about 325 beneficiaries fall  under the Dibbur welfare project and the administration agreed to provide sites to all of them. However nothing has been done so far in this regard” charged the office bearers. They also added that despite numerous protests in front of the CMC and District Administration offices, the indifference continues.
They warned that about 1000 people will gheroe the CMC on the 27th of December. It was added that the distribution of sites to slum dwellers would be a major issue before the elections under the Ashraya scheme. They also said that a litigation would be filed against the District administration for the continued negligence over the issue despite repeated requests to all the authorities concerned.
Distant dreams
Hoping to have a home that they can call their own, nearly 300 slum dwellers have paid money for it.People who fall under the general category have paid Rs 5000 and people from the backward communities have paid Rs 2500 towards the same.
But despite this the government and the administration have done nothing for them.
What next?
A total of  Rs 9,15,975 has been collected about a year ago with no progress in sight.
Several pleas have been sent to the Municipal Commissioner and the DC, but the authorities seem to have made it the least of their priorities.
The slum dwellers have therefore decided to lay siege the offices to garner attention to their  problems that seem to have no end.
