In a radical departure from tradition, a girl lit the pyre of her father on beaches of the river Rapti here. According to Hindu belief, entry of girls is prohibited in crematoria. Bechu Lal Gupta (50), a tailor, died of a prolonged illness on Monday. Lal did not have a son. Therefore, breaking with tradition, his daughter lit his pyre.
Besides, Bechu’s wife and other seven daughters were also present, while his mortal remains were consigned to flames.
