In the thick of chaos
Uma Ananth
Bannerghatta road is a prestigious roads in the city. Major IT companies, huge apartments, luxurious hospitals, grand wedding halls and commercial complexes are located on this road.

Sadly, the road is burgeoned with heavy traffic resulting in hours of ‘jam’ sessions. The main signals on this road are Dairy Circle, BTM check post, Bilekahalli, Arakere, Hulimavu Gate, Gottigere, Bannerghatta circle and moves on to Jigani Industrial area.

Initially, the road was used by tourists visiting the Banneghatta National Park. Gradually, this road saw a host of IT companies setting up their base here. Some IT companies who have a presence on this road include Honeywell, Accenture, Oracle, Infosys, Convergys and BPL.

This road has witnessed real estate boom with heavy investment in this area. The land values goes up because of the IT companies, hospitals and educational institutions. BG Road is becoming home to a number of reputed hospitals like the Sagar Apollo, Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology, Wockhardt and Apollo Hospital.

V N Murali, the ex-Councillor of Bommanahalli City Muncipal Council has provided some solutions. To create link roads from BG Road to Jayanagar, BTM Layout, Begur, Hosur road, Kanakapura road, Konanakunte cross etc. To make alternative arrangements by widening the road in bus stands at Bilekahalli, Arakere gate, Hulimavu gate and Meenakshi Temple.

“If the authorities plan to construct cut flyovers near JP Nagar third phase to Bilekahalli, from Bilekahalli bus stop to Arakere Gate and Hulimavu gate will help overcome the trafic jam”, Murali adds.

Civic amenities in the surrounding layouts are in a poor state and need to be upgraded immediately. During rains, the road is filled with drain water and vehicles are stuck for hours together.Though it is very difficult to control traffic jam in this area during peak hours, the traffic police is striving hard.  The BBMP officials has already conducted a survey to make alternative arrangements to control the traffic jam at Bannerghatta road. BBMP Commissioner Dr Subrahmanya and his staff has decided to widen the road wherever it is possible and have a look at the drainage system.

If the Corporation plans to think of any remedy or solution to control traffic jam problem here, the people here will be grateful to the effort taken.
