This year, Hanuma Jayanthi was celebrated on December 22. While different decorations for Lord Hanuman Idols is common in all Hanuman Temples, what is unusual at Sri Veeranjaneya Swamy Temple in Mahalaxmi Layout is that, here the temple authorities will go around (up to 100 kilometres) to feed any number of monkeys on this sacred day!
Krishnamurthy Rao, Hon. Founder Secretary of the Temple Trust, says, "We feel feeding monkeys on Hanuma Jayanthi is the real offering one can offer to Lord Hanuman". Hence on this day a fleet of cars with different kinds of fruits and sweet pongal, will go where one can find more monkeys to offer prasadam. Some of the places we cover every year include Chikka Thirupathi, Shivagange, Viduraswatha near Gowribidanur, Ghati Subramanya, etc.”
“This activity has been going on for the last three decades, without any interruption. Each year, people will come forward to volunteer.” he adds
Another interesting annual event at this temple is Butter Decoration to Lord Sri Veeranjaneya Swamy on the last Saturday of Shravana Masa. According to Krishnamurthy Rao, the butter decoration, which began in the year 1976, has been going on annually without any interruption. The butter requirement to paste this entire statue is 425 Kgs, and it takes eight people to work for four hours to complete the task. As per Mr Rao, there will be nearly one to one and a half lakh devotees, who throng this temple to have a glimpse of Lord Veeranjaneya Swamy.
The colossal size of Lord Prasanna Veeranjaneya Swami which is 22 ft height, 15 ft width and 4 ft thickness is a feast for the eyes. This entire statue has been carved from a single stone. On the auspicious occasion of its Silver Jubilee Celebrations, the temple authorities installed a huge Goddess Mahalakshmi in the premises in June 2001. This statue is the biggest in South Asia!
The temple also undertakes many activities to serve the society. The temple trust is running a free clinic for the needy. Here one can get consultation as well as medicines free of cost. Interestingly treatment is available in allopathic, homeopathy and Ayurveda also. Another wonderful activity that this temple trust has undertaken is free eye-operations every month. There is a monthly free eye camp on every second Saturday. Expert eye surgeons from well-known eye hospital, Sri Narayana Nethralaya will perform the operations.
To keep body and mind happy and healthy, and to lead a peaceful and purposeful life, the temple authorities have been conducting yoga classes in the morning and evening.
There is also a well-equipped Adhyatmika library in the temple premises. One can find any number of books on spirituality, Ramayana, Mahabharatha, Bhagavath Gita, etc. Devotees have free access to this library.
Recently books on Engineering, medicine and computer science have also been included for the benefit of college-going students .
There is a vast and spacious place in the temple premises where cultural programmes are held every Saturday in the evening between 6 and 8 pm. These functions are open to public.
