Prohibitory orders under section 144 have been promulgated in communally sensitive B C Road area, 24 km from here, after a clash erupted between people of two different communities on Friday.
According to initial reports, atleast 10 people, including two police have been injured in the clash, while more than 7 vehicles have been damaged. Two shops in the town were put afire and some others suffered as stones were pelted at them. The loss incurred in the melee is yet to be estimated, according to police.
The clash started when some activists of an organisation recovered cow meat in one of the shops in the town and one among them tried to videograph the shop premises. On their return, some members of another community assaulted them, resulting in clashes in different corners of the town.
Some miscreants pelted stones on the vehicles plying on NH 48 that passes amidst the town, as a result of which some passengers were injured. Stones were also pelted on shops, and fearing violence, all the shops in the town were closed. Members of both the communities were said to be involved in violent clashes and pelting stones. Vehicular movement was stopped on NH for an hour.
The situation came under control after Inspector General of Police (Western Range) A M Prasad and Superintendent of Police N Sathish Kumar rushed to the town and deputed police personnel in critical areas. Vehicles started crossing BC Road by 4:30 pm under police vigilance. When Deccan Herald visited the spot, a large number of passengers were found waiting for vehicles in the empty bus stand and along the deserted roads.
