Look beyond the little black dress
The party season is upon us and obviously, all of us want to dazzle. And if you are wondering how to, Bindu Gopal Rao gives you a peek into what's hot and what's not

Black is a trend that is present in most seasons and will continue to dominate. Trends in party wear this season include silky, smooth fabrics, iridescent and livened with shimmering satins. "Patent-leather shoes have a shiny retro look but have a mod-glamour look for today. Layered jewellery and large handbags and sapphire, emerald, ruby and amethyst are all great colour choices for 2007. When wearing a deep jewel tone, keep the rest of your ensemble neutral by choosing black, white, gray or a neutral like beige, taupe or tan," says Neeti Chopra, Head-Marketing, Westside. For men, the colours that are in are the dark tones of blacks, deep violet, very deep browns, wine and champagne and the light tones of beige and white. Fabrics that are in include synthetic blends, polyester cotton, cotton viscose, polyester cotton nylon, Velvets, lycra blends and fabrics with satin finish. The weaves are finer, jacquards, self textures and glitter use is minimal. Styling is more elegant with minimalist detailing. The fits for men are more close to body, the bottoms are tapered and the collar and cuff details are small and delicate. The combination of dark colours like wine and black bottoms with deep wine shirts is in. Says Ameet Panchal, CEO, Lee Cooper India Pvt. Ltd, “straighter leg silhouettes for men and slimmer leg variations for women are going to be the in thing. Styling takes the form of twisted classic pieces, with addition to small details, rather than overt fashion treatments.”

Well-fitted shirts and clean dark jeans will be an all time favourite for men. Don't hesitate to try out a polka-printed or embroidered shirts this party season, as after all it's the attitude that counts. For women, colours in dark tones like blacks, deep violet, very deep browns, wine and champagne monochromes apart from white are in. "Tone on tones is also in with mix and match of same colour fabrics in knits and satins and tones of red, purple, and plum are also strong colours that make a statement. As far as fabrics are concerned knits, satin prints, synthetic blends, poly lycra, viscose lycra, cotton viscose, polyester cotton nylon blends, satins, crepes and drape rich fabrics are in," says Vinay Nadkarni, CEO Globus. The fits for women are more voluminous to body.
The bottoms are tapered. The combination of volume top with fitted bottoms is a very strong trend. The neck details are enhanced and sleeves are voluminous. Denim continues to remain a strong trend. Watch out for the dark indigo skinny leg jeans - a must have! This is also a good time to try out radical shades such as purple in its different hues or even shades of red and orange.

Accessorize
To complete the look, you also need to get your accessories right. Rado has recently launched the limited editions of Ceramica Chronograph restyled by designer Jasper Morrison. Available in five tones - ranging from white to pink gold with black, this is the one accessory you do not want to miss. "This season it's Black and Gold that will dominate the party circles. Black that compliments this shimmering colour is also the colour of the season out of the palate," says Francois Nunez, International Head of Marketing, Rado.

Show off your gold charm bracelet or favourite pair of dangling earrings. Match hair adornments and a handbag to the motif, material or colours in your outfit. Make sure your hair looks clean and groomed and gel it if necessary. Silver and white are dominating colours. Do not over do your accessories by wearing a neck, hand, ear piece, etc. Choose one, and make it bold.
