“Universities must become multi-faceted system,” said Nitte Education Trust Chairman N Vinay Hegde.
Speaking after inaugurating the newly constructed Mangala canteen and Applied Zoology museum at the university campus here on Saturday, he came down heavily on the diversion of professional colleges from the conventional universities. The specialised university for medical and paramedical sciences, technical education, agriculture have reduced the quality of education. This has forced many of the colleges to ask for deemed status.
“Changing the syllabus according to the needs of the society and the industry is impossible in a monolithic university system,” he said and added: “In the last 10 years, these specialised universities did not contribute anything for the professional colleges.”
The whole system runs just for conducting the examination, announcing the results and no academic interaction is being done. He said research is important in academic system. Without research, teachers can not upgrade their knowledge. Without updating the knowledge, the teaching becomes constant.
Mangalore University Vice-Chancellor Prof K M Kaveriappa said infrastructure of the university needs to be developed. Though the the university has excelled in the research but the infrastructure is lagging behind.
