To bail out the embarrassed CPM-led Left Front government in West Bengal, controversial Bangladesh writer, Taslima Nasreen has been asked by the powers that be, to relocate to Kerala, another Left-ruled state. But Nasreen politely rejected the proposal saying that if she was not safe in Kolkata, there was no guarantee she would be safe in a new place like Kerala, where language would be a constant barrier.
With CPM patriarch Jyoti Basu making categorical statements that Taslima was welcome to return to Kolkata provided the Centre ensured her security, her hopes brightened for awhile. But with increasing pressure from the Imams, Bengal’s top CPM leaders have instead suggested that she relocate to Kerala, reports here said.
“After her refusal to shift base from Kolkata, she was then advised to settle in one of the European countries which too she refused,” reports said.
Under pressure from a section within the Left and intellectuals to live up to its secular image, that is being increasingly questioned following their refusal to allow Taslima’s return to Kolkata, the Marxist government here is keen to see the writer shift to another Left-ruled state.
“This will bail the Buddhadev Bhattacherjee government out of the current impasse over her, as Taslima’s mysterious departure has only helped the BJP train guns at the CPM.” reports said.
Taslima has reportedly conveyed to the West Bengal government that if there is no immediate possibility of her return to Kolkata, that she would prefer to continue at her ‘undisclosed location’ near New Delhi and not move to Kerala.
