PhD research: Varsity nod for 8 centres
DH News Service, Bangalore:
The Bangalore University academic council on Saturday approved the recommendation by an expert committee, to establish research centres for PhD students in eight affiliated colleges.

The expert committee, headed by Dr H T Rathod, had after inspection, recommended Government Arts Centre, VHD Central Institute of Home Sciences, Christ College, Government Science College, Dr Rammanohar Lohia College of Law, Government RC College of Commerce and Management, KLE Society’s S Nijalingappa College, and Mount Carmel College. As many as 10 colleges had sought recognition.

The council also discussed the re-introduction of the M Phil programme. The M Phil programme was stopped eight years ago, and due to the non-availability of this course, many BU students pursued their studies in other States. The programme will be re-introduced in the university, Bangalore University Vice-Chancellor Prof H A Ranganath told the meeting.

BEd in english
The council also resolved to institute BEd course in English in Bangalore University, in association with the Regional Institute of English (RIE) from the next academic year. The eligibility for this one-year course is any degree, but the candidates should have studied English as an optional paper. The intake for the course is 100 - of these, 80 seats will be for students from the southern states, and 20 for students from the northern parts of India. There are about five states in South India, and 16 students from each state will be considered. A Common Entrance Test (CET) will be conducted for admission to this course.

The council also decided to introduce Kannada as a subject for the five-year LLB course. Besides Bangalore University, the Bar Council of India (BCI) has to approve the inclusion of the subject, as it is a statutory authority to prescribe the number of papers required to be taught in the five-year LLB course, Prof H A Ranganath said.

No age limit
The council also decided do away with the maximum age limit of 22 years for admission to the first semester of the five-year LLB course. Henceforth, there will be no cap on age limit for joining the course. This has been done keeping in mind the larger interest of students.

The council also approved the amendment of ordinances pertaining to malpractices in the university examination. Another issue approved by the council was the revision of syllabus for the UG and PG engineering courses in UVCE from the academic year 2008-09.
