In a filmy style operation, police seized sandalwood worth Rs 4 lakh and a vehicle used for transport after chasing the culprits.
Acting on a tip off, Ajjampura police were waiting for their hunt near Gondedahalli Gate by 7 am. But knowing this a little earlier, the sandalwood transporters turned their Scorpio towards Kadoor via Thammadahalli (Sollapura) Road.
The Police who chased the car, informed about the same to police stations at Birur, Kadoor and Antaraghatte through wireless. All stations made arrangements to round up the culprits.
In the meantime, Ajjampura Sub Inspector Dileep Kumar fired at the vehicle but in vain. When the police vehicle was not at their sight, the thieves threw 10 bags of sandalwood out of the car near Turuvinahalla, and drove towards Birur when they saw the police.
But it was Birur police jeep waiting for their arrival amidst the road, and the Scorpio purposefully collided with the police jeep. Using the bewilderment of the situation, two persons inside the car fled from the scene leaving everything there. One more bag was recovered from the vehicle, that had Mangalore registration.
A case has been registered in Ajjampura police station. Investigation is on under the guidance of Tarikere Circle Inspector Dharmaraj.
Police officials have appreciated the jeep driver Prakash for he chased the Scorpio in a brave manner.
