The farmers who supplied sugarcane to the sugar factory were enraged when they realised that the factory had closed sugarcane crushing on Saturday, owing to technical reasons. They had arrived to the factory premises with bullock carts filled with sugarcane and kept waiting since Saturday morning for the crushing to begin. Tired, without food and sleep, they resorted to snap stir near Nanda Talkies Circle.
They blocked the Mysore-Bangalore highway, leading to traffic chaos. Some of the vehicles were diverted to alternate route.
The protesters also rushed to the factory Circle and began protesting. The police arrived on the spot and resorted to mild lathi charge.
Slogans
Meanwhile, a group of protesters gathered near the crushing machines in the factory premises and began shouting slogans against the officials. The police dispersed them also, while some protesters escaped to the bullock cart yard. The police followed them here, while some protesters resorted to stone-pelting. The police however, evicted the protesters from the factory premises.
Leaders Hallegere Shivaram, Krishnaprasad, Thimmaiah and farmers were arrested and later on released in the night.
Three persons - Satish of Boodanuru village, Lohit of Shanakanahalli and Prasanna of Hosuru village have been injured in the lathi charge and were treated at the district hospital. Tight security has been provided around the factory.
