The Nirmala Nagar programme is the talk of the town in Tumkur at present since its launch. But in reality it is the waste management or solid waste management which is the core issue, opined some the educated citizens.
The woes of the people of Tumkur city doesn’t seem to end. It is the same even with the local authorities which is caught in the catch 22 situation.
In the recent judgement Supreme Court has asked all the local bodies to set up Solid Waste Management unit for the scientific disposal of the waste and also to coordinate the waste management in towns and cities.
Though the time given by Supreme court to set up the unit is over local authorities have not been able to establish one.
Contempt of court
The authorities now faces contempt of court on hand and on other farmers agitation as farmers not willing to part with their land for the proposed construction of waste management unit .
In addition to this authorities also faces the mockery of the Nirmala Nagar programme if it is not implemented.
The Supreme Court under the Nirmala Nagar programme has directed the local authorities not to dump the waste on the sides of the roads in the city outskirts or in tanks. But local authorities in contradiction to this have dumped the waste where it could find place and has announced the implementation of the scheme.
As already published authorities have identified 40 acres of land in Ajjagondanahalli village near Kora hobli for the establishment of Solid Waste Management unit. But now some of the farmers are now protesting the move though initially they had no problem with the project. Some of the NGOs are also supporting the farmers seeing their protest.
Team
Aware of the seriousness of the issue CMC Commissioner Abdul Khayyum had decided to lead a team to the solid waste management unit in Mavallipura near Bangalore on a study tour.
Fake promise Accordingly three buses were arranged for the tour one each for CMC members, farmers and NGOs. But on the day of the visit many CMC members who had won the election promising to solve the woes of people and development didn’t turn up for the visit. Only 20 members of total 35 members were present for the visit along with farmers and members of few NGO organisation. Instead of three buses two buses left for Banglore.
Though the team arrived in Bangalore by afternoon due to technical reasons they were not allowed to visit the site immediately. Some of the angry members vented their anger on the Commissioner for the delay.
BBMP officials later arranged for the visit and showed them the scientific way of managing the waste and its conversion to fertiliser. Some of the farmers present cleared their doubts and the team returned to Tumkur by night.
Though the team has returned solution to the problem seems elusive as some of farmers have said to take a decision after consulting the villagers.
Alternative suggested
while the other farmers have opposed the setting of the unit in Ajjagondanahalli village and have instead suggested authorities to set up the unit at Seebe since government has its own land and have said that it is ideal as it is arid.
However people of Tumkur are waiting for the implementation of the Nirmala Nagar programme.
