Three airports in Karnataka are operating under loss, while the HAL airport at Bangalore is churning out profits.
Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel told Parliament on Monday that airports at Belgaum, Hubli and Mangalore reported losses for the last three financial years.
The Mangalore airport suffered losses of Rs 8.91 crore, Rs 11.14 crore and Rs 6.26 crore during 2006-07, 2005-06 and 2004-05 respectively.
The Hubli airport incurred losses of Rs 79.83 lakh, Rs 1.28 crore and Rs 1.30 crore, while Belgaum airport incurred losses of Rs 8.23 crore, Rs 2.23 crore and Rs 1.58 crore all these years.
While the Bangalore airport was one of the 15 [out of 127 airports] which churned out profits during 2006-07, the revenues of the Bangalore airport stood at Rs 162.82 crore that fiscal. Its operating results for 2004-05 and 2005-06 were at Rs 62.04 crore and 121.05 crore respectively. The minister added, “While many of the loss-making airports are being maintained on socio-economic considerations.”
