Tension in Surathkal: Ban orders in Dakshina Kannada district
DH News Service, Mangalore:
Section 144 has been enforced in the district from Wednesday 1 pm to Friday midnight as a precautionary measure, said Superintendent of Police Sathish Kumar on Wednesday.

The incidents of one Mr Sunil who was attacked by a group of miscreants at Angaragundi on Tuesday and Hamza who was attacked in the same region on Wednesday ignited tension in Surathkal region.

Addressing a news conference SP said that the section has been enforced as a consequence to the two assault incidents and in wake of Dec 6, which has been declared as ‘black day’ by one community and as ‘Vijayotsava’ by another with regard to Babri Masjid issue.

However, SP said that the situation overall is peaceful and no communal twist can be given to the Tuesday ad Wednesday’s assault cases.

“It was a fight between two groups or rather a previous grudge. No communal angle can be attached to these incidents,” he said.

Security beefed up
He said that security has been beefed up to avert any kind of untoward incident occurring on Thursday and accordingly 8 Karnataka State Reserve Police platoons have been deployed in the district along with 5 striking parties, 300 home guards and 40 mobile patrolling vehicles, which will be on road for 24 hours.

Apart from this, police picketing will be done in all sensitive points.

SP said that since there is a trend of miscreants using motor bikes and full faced helmets for executing attacks, vehicles will be checked for documents at several points across the district.

A press release from Additional District Magistrate S A Prabhakar Sharma said that during the section no person or group of people are allowed to assemble on roads and public places, possess weapons and explosives of any kind or participate in processions, shout out slogans, make instigating lectures and speech, distribute or paste handbills.

Peace Meet held
A peace meet was held at Lions Club Hall in Surathkal on Wednesday evening to safeguard peace law and order in Surathkal region under the presidentship of Assistant Magistrate Shameer Shukla.
